Celebrex, the brand name for the medication Celecoxib, has been a subject of much discussion for years. It was initially approved by the FDA in 2004, but it was quickly recognized for its long-lasting action. In the years after its FDA approval, Celebrex was being used by patients for chronic pain and arthritis. It’s now widely used and is approved for more than 200,000 patients across the U. S. But what does this drug have to do with arthritis?
Celebrex is a Coxib medication, and it’s known for its long-term, potent action. It’s often prescribed for long-term pain management, and patients sometimes wonder if it could also be used as a long-term treatment for their arthritis.
In the early 1990s, doctors began looking at Celebrex’s potential benefits for arthritis. Many physicians knew Celebrex was a potential treatment for arthritis, but they didn’t fully understand its benefits, so they began looking at other options. Celebrex is also more likely to cause a more severe form of arthritis, called rheumatoid arthritis, than other arthritis medications, according to Rector. The risk is also lower among those with other chronic diseases, he said. It also has a lower risk of side effects, like gastrointestinal upset, which can occur with Celebrex.
“There are other medications that are less likely to cause rheumatoid arthritis than Celebrex, but I’ve never seen anyone to do that,” Rector said. “I’ve never seen a patient that has not had arthritis.”
Celebrex has also been linked to liver problems, including liver failure, a type of liver disorder that can occur with arthritis, and the use of NSAIDs like ibuprofen and naproxen, the drugs that block the Coxib receptors in the stomach.
In addition, Celebrex is linked to an increased risk of a rare hereditary disease called heterozygous familial hyperparathyroidism, a condition that affects nearly half of the population. It is more likely to occur in people who are of a particular family history of the condition.
In addition to these concerns, Rector’s team discovered that Celebrex may be associated with a higher risk of certain cancers, including breast, colon, pancreas, colon cancer, lung, prostate, bladder, and lung cancer, among other things. The risk is particularly high for people with a personal or family history of cancer.
